Crocheted Blankets-Old Fashioned or Granny Chic?

I love the idea of incorporating family heirlooms (valuable or not) into decor and "granny blankets" fit right in with today's vintage-modern aesthetics.  Choosing a brightly colored vintage afghan instead of a new throw can add so much character and life to a room.  I remember curling up in a crocheted afghan at my grandmother's house and feeling so warm and cozy.

Throw one over your Ikea couch with array of pillows.

How colorful is this beauty?

Recognize Ann Perkin's home from Parks and Rec?  Love that show!

An afghan, a crocheted pillow and a granny square garland make this room so layered and homey.

This child's room is so sweet.  And, P.S., I think my parents had that exact table when I was a kid.

And here's our afghan that I just discovered in the attic while looking through Noah's old hand-me-downs for Jack.  Whoops!  Amazing the things that never make it out of the box when you move.  My husband's grandmother knitted it and I love the colors in our playroom.

I would have taken a wider angled shot, but I've had two sick kids, one right after another, and everything outside of this frame was a huge mess.

Have you guys inherited any old afghans or quilts?

  1. When I was in college I crocheted blankets all the time. I never got very good at it though, and the ones I still have aren't all that pretty. I love the look of a well made afghan or quit as long as the rest of the room is fresh and modern. I especially love the white-with-pops-of-color blanket in the first picture. :)

    1. I know, isn't it beautiful? I never got past crocheting endless, long strings when I was a kid! Never knew what to do with those :)

  3. I love your afghan. So modern looking!

And I know it's not what you meant to show, but I am dying over that mushroom stool in the fifth photo!

    1. Thanks, Erin! Isn't that stool darling? I bet you could find a thrift store stool and make one for your girls.
